A portrait of Mary Cotterill

A tribute to May Cotterill, SCN

On Tuesday 7th November, Mike Jameson, Chair of Birmingham IA, presented an oil painting of the late Mary Cotterill, a retired SCN who worked tirelessly in the interests of Birmingham IA members and stoma and Internal Pouch patients in general, to staff at the Ruth Astles Centre, Heartlands Hospital.

Mary’s vision led to the creation of the Ruth Astles Centre at Heartlands Hospital, a facility which is still valued today by patients and nursing staff. Ruth Astles was Mary’s patient and bequeathed the funding for the unit, and Mary managed the project of building the stoma unit from start to finish.

Mike presented the oil painting to Richie Asilo, Yetunde Fadipe, Karen Entwistle and Emma Astley-Hill. It will be hung alongside the existing oil painting of Ruth Astles. Birmingham IA are delighted that Mary will be honoured in this way at the stoma unit which she created.

I want to thank all who attended our social coffee morning in Sutton Coldfield..and also thank Alex Browning from Dansac on her presentation to the group on a throught-provoking discussion on what ostomists throught was their top priorities in selecting stoma bags, eliminating leaks was the top reason for this amongst the members who attended..it was good to see the discussions of different views from our members. This highlighted that no one size fits all when it comes down to stomas bag.
