The new Ruth Astles Centre at Heartlands Hospital!

On Tuesday 13th May, we were delighted to be invited to the official opening of the newly-refurbished Ruth Astles Centre at Heartlands Hospital. We were doubly-delighted that Mike Jameson, retired Chair of Birmingham IA, was invited to cut the ribbon (and the cake!) at the event.

Staff at the Centre have always been very supportive of IA and mindful of its history: Ruth Astles was a patient of the late Mary Cotterill, a stoma nurse who was committed to IA, and left a legacy for the creation of the centre to improve the lives of future ostomists. Mary was responsible for bringing the project to fruition.

When the staff were recently forced to move into alternative accommodation at the hospital, the SCN team sprang into action and have created a warm, welcoming space where ostomists can be treated with privacy.

The opening was a very happy event, supported by patients and patient groups IA, CA and the Holly Trust. Birmingham IA members were very pleased to be invited.
