On Thursday 20th July, Miss Melissa Cunha, colorectal surgeon from the QE Hospital Birmingham and President of Birmingham IA, very kindly spent an evening talking to us about parastomal hernias. Twenty six members joined this Zoom meeting, and we were also joined by Carol Katte, Stoma Nurse Liaison Officer from National IA. She described the risk factors and causes of herniation, management of the condition and discussed treatment. Her interesting talk was illustrated by her presentation, which is available in the Resources section of the website. After the presentation, Miss Cunha responded to questions from members and emphasised the importance of tailored exercise to strengthen the core muscles, for those seeking to avoid herniation and also for those with existing hernias. Carol Katte reminded everyone about the exercise programme offered by National IA with Sarah Russell. This programme is available to IA members and anyone interested should sign up on the National website.
We are very grateful to both Ms Cunha, for sharing her professional expertise with us, and to Carol Katte for joining us.

I want to thank all who attended our social coffee morning in Sutton Coldfield..and also thank Alex Browning from Dansac on her presentation to the group on a throught-provoking discussion on what ostomists throught was their top priorities in selecting stoma bags, eliminating leaks was the top reason for this amongst the members who attended..it was good to see the discussions of different views from our members. This highlighted that no one size fits all when it comes down to stomas bag.
