Does Birmingham have more canals than Venice?
On 10th July, 35 intrepid Birmingham IA members and their guests boarded a canal barge to find out. They were blessed with fine weather as they set sail from Brindley Place on a two-hour tour with guided commentary, travelling around places of significance in Birmingham’s Industrial past and also towards more rural areas of the city. The tour was superb and IA members made full use of the hot drinks and bar facility on board.
Back on dry land again, they went for lunch at The Tap and Spile, a waterside pub in Brindley Place, where they enjoyed meals from a fantastic menu with a range of choices.
Venice may have more canals than Birmingham – but Birmingham has more miles of canal, and they were greatly enjoyed by Birmingham IA on this summer’s afternoon.
